Studio Portraits

A classical, two-year figurative drawing and anatomy BFA requirement firmly established my lifelong interest in the genre which led me to Paris for further classical study, or so I thought. . .

During a self-appointed student sabbatical in Paris, at École des Beaux-Arts, realism was eschewed in favor of “modern art” and so returning stateside to New York and pursued additional figurative studies at the Art Students League, Janus Collaborative and new ateliers: Grand Central Atelier, Chelsea Classical and Florence Academy/US.

With independent studies in landscape painting, I was a Met Copyist (Barbizon: Camille Corot’s “Fontainebleau: Oak Trees at Bas-Bréau), and workshops with contemporary landscape painters. She recently participated in 2023 Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival, 2023 AIS (Brandywine) PA and a third Jeffersonville Winter Rendezvous in Vermont in 2024.

Karen’s work has been shown in national juried exhibitions and invitationals including: The Detroit Institute of Arts “Michigan Focus” curated by Grace Hartigan, American Impressionists Society, Atelier at Flowerfield, Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, Bryan Memorial Gallery, Scarab Club, Bannerman Island Gallery and in private collections.

As host of Portrait Model Zoom virtual sketch sessions (since 2020) a roster of international studio models and participating artists.
