Sunset Plein Air, Bannerman Castle, 2021–2024

FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS I’ve had the pleasure to participate in a Sunset Plein Air event sponsored by the Bannerman Castle Trust in Beacon NY. Boarding a late afternoon ferry with the group of artists for a few precious hours painting on the island is transporting in more ways than one.

The rocky alpine garden paths and hidden grottoes provide stunning 360-degree views of the Hudson River Highlands, with an occasional roar of a distant commuter train breaking its magic spell.

A Bannerman Gallery Exhibition concludes the event as a fundraiser to assist in the preservation of this unique landmark.

“Culture will come only when every man will know how to address himself to the inanimate simple things of life. A pot, a cup, a piece of calico, a chair, a mantle, a frame, the binding of a book, the trimming of a dress…these we live with. Culture will come when people touch things with love and see them with a penetrating eye”
